Just to the east of Downtown Asheville is the scenic neighborhood of Haw Creek. Named for the majestic valley where it lies, homes within Haw Creek are surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains. The neighborhood is crisscrossed by trails, yet is still conveniently located near one of Asheville’s main centers of commerce along Tunnel Road.

On warm spring days, Haw Creek residents are pulled to enjoy all the amenities their surrounding area has to offer. Here just five local attractions within minutes of Haw Creek.

Asheville Municipal Golf Course

Did you know that the Asheville Municipal Golf Course is one of the oldest golf courses in Western North Carolina? This 18-hole, par 72 course was designed by Donald Ross and opened originally in 1927. The front nine measures 3,246 yards from the back tees, calling for a driver on every hole. Rental clubs are available from the clubhouse, as is a pro shop and concession area. Come out to enjoy a fun and challenging round. The course is open daily to the public, weather permitting.

Blue Ridge Parkway

The Haw Creek neighborhood backs up to a section of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway. (In fact, some of the neighborhood trails lead to the Parkway.) Known as “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway is more than a scenic roadway linking rural mountain areas of Western North Carolina and Virginia—it’s a national park. Take the route to Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain east of the Rockies, or simply enjoy the scenic overlooks nearby.

Folk Art Center

Located at milepost 382 of the BRP, the Folk Art Center is a museum of Appalachian arts and crafts that’s worth the stop for locals and visitors alike. In addition to rotating exhibitions showcasing the finest traditional and contemporary local craft, the Folk Art Center hosts a variety of events and artist demonstrations. The Folk Art Center is the most popular attraction along the Parkway, drawing 250,000 people each year.

Highland Brewing Company

Independent and family owned since 1994, Highland Brewing Company carved the path for Asheville’s craft beer movement. Today, Highland has the capacity to brew over 60,000 barrels of beer each year. Check out the back pasture on nice days, but don’t miss the indoor event space. Their rooftop bar accommodates 300 people, and the main level Event Center welcomes over 700 people around the stage, mezzanine, and two bars.

WNC Nature Center

For over 45 years, the WNC Nature Center has educated the public about the natural history, flora, and fauna of the Southern Appalachians. They also utilize their 42-acre zoological park to promote public responsibility for conservation in our area. Take the whole family and visit with over 60 species of wild and domestic animals and hundreds of species of plants, all representative of this unique bio-region.
